Jungle River Lodge, Pico Bonito National Park, Honduras
Saludos de la Selva,
Following Utila, we headed to the Pico Bonito National
Park and spent four days at the Jungle Lodge located directly on the Rio Cangrejal. The Pico Bonito National Park is named after the third highest mountain in Honduras (7917 ft or 2436 m) and is a completely different climate from the sea e.g. much cooler and fewer insects. The Rio Cangrejal is only 20 miles long, but it has very tumultuous Class IV, III, and II rapids as it heads to the sea. It is an extremely technical river with lots of drop offs and white water. The girls did great and Jenny commented that is was a good thing that we could all swim. The lodge did a great job with the pre-rafting training to include swimming in the rapids, learning the commands, and what to do if you dump the raft. We liked it some much that we went twice and spent the last day on a canopy tour. We rode cables through the tree tops and across the river. Once again, the girls did great and really enjoyed themselves. The lodge has a series of swimming pools that are carved out of river stone and the girls spent hours playing in the water. It was nice to be on the river and the wildlife was spectacular. After our time on the Rio Cangrejal, the girls should be ready for anything that we do in Montana on our rivers there. Next stop, Tikal.
